Valentine's Day origins and traditions
Valentine's Day on 14 February is named after Saint Valentine, a martyr whose feast day was recognised by the Church in the fifth century. The association with romance grew in the Middle Ages, when poets such as Chaucer linked the date with the mating of birds. The sending of cards began in the 18th century and today cards, flowers and meals out are the most common way to mark the day. Restaurants book up quickly, so reserving a table a week or two ahead helps, and online orders for flowers and gifts need time for delivery.
