Remembrance Day and the two-minute silence
Remembrance Day is held on 11 November, marking the armistice that ended fighting on the Western Front in the First World War at 11am in 1918. In the UK a two-minute silence is observed at 11am, and the nearest Sunday, Remembrance Sunday, is marked with a national service at the Cenotaph in London. Red poppies, sold by the Royal British Legion, are worn in the weeks beforehand to remember those who died in conflict and to support serving and former members of the armed forces. Many workplaces, schools and shops pause for the silence.
