The story behind Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night, also called Guy Fawkes Night, is held on 5 November to mark the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators planned to blow up the House of Lords and King James I. Guy Fawkes was found guarding the barrels of gunpowder in the cellar and was arrested. Ever since, the date has been marked with bonfires, fireworks, toffee apples and parkin. For safety, attend a licensed public display if you can, keep pets indoors, and if you set off fireworks at home follow the Firework Code: keep spectators well back, never go back to a lit firework and always keep water to hand.
