About International Women's Day
International Women's Day is held on 8 March each year to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to call for gender equality. The first national Women's Day was held in the United States in 1909, and the United Nations began marking 8 March in 1975. Each year carries a campaign theme, and events range from workplace talks and school assemblies to community fundraising. Many organisations use the day to highlight pay-gap reporting, mentoring and fundraising for women's charities, and you can take part by supporting a women-led business, donating to a cause or simply recognising a colleague's work.
