About Earth Day
Earth Day is held every year on 22 April and is widely seen as the start of the modern environmental movement. The first event took place in 1970, when millions of people took part in demonstrations across the United States, and it helped lead to laws such as the US Clean Air Act. Today it is observed in more than 190 countries, with community litter picks, tree planting, school activities and campaigns. Simple actions that fit into a single day include checking your household recycling, switching to a reusable bottle, reducing food waste and finding out whether your local area runs a community clean-up that you could join.
