Why passphrases?
A 5-word passphrase like "correct-horse-battery-staple-purple" is far easier to remember than "K9$mqL2#R" — and just as strong (often stronger). It's an XKCD-inspired approach: easier to memorise, harder to crack. The strength comes from word count, not complexity.
Entropy explained
Entropy measures the strength of a password in bits. Each additional word in a passphrase from a ~7,000-word list adds ~12.8 bits of entropy. A 5-word passphrase has roughly 64 bits — strong enough for most needs. 6+ words protect even against state-level attackers.
The Diceware method (rolling 5 dice per word from a 7,776-word list) produces about 12.9 bits of entropy per word. A 6-word passphrase has ~77 bits — comparable to a 13-character random password, but far easier to remember.
Pick the number of words based on what the passphrase protects: 4 words for low-stakes accounts, 6 for important ones, 8+ for master passwords or anything truly sensitive.
