How to use

1

GPA on the 4.0 scale

The standard 4.0 scale assigns A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. GPA = (Σ grade × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Credits are usually credit hours (US) or course units.

2

Weighted vs unweighted

Weighted scales (4.5 or 5.0) award extra points for harder courses — typically Honours, AP or IB classes. A weighted scale lets a top student in difficult courses score above 4.0. Most US universities recalculate to an unweighted 4.0 scale when comparing applicants from different schools.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated on a 4.0 scale?

Multiply each course's grade points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) by its credit hours, add them up and divide by total credit hours.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every course equally on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honours, AP or IB courses, so it can exceed 4.0.

Does this work for UK degree classifications?

UK universities usually classify degrees by percentage averages and weightings rather than GPA, so use this tool for US-style GPA only.
